Bored with pumping iron in the gym?  Looking to try a super fun and engaging workout, and spend time outside?

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing available at your very own Campus Rec. It involves following established routes (designated by hold colors and tape) until you "top-out." While it may not seem like a lot, bouldering can be a very intense and a strength-building workout if you want it to be. Bouldering requires a bit of strength and opens the door to newfound arm, grip, and shoulder strength.

Bouldering also requires technical skills. It's important to be precise in your hand and foot placement for this reason. A plan of where to go on the route (a beta) helps you understand the moves required to get through effectively, using problem solving and technical skills learned through Outdoor Rec.

Bouldering is a great activity for anyone (regardless of size, shape, gender, and ability) wanting to get outside more, try a new and exciting workout, meet new people, or just have fun. Outdoor Rec rents out FREE climbing shoes, chalk, and crash pads.  Many of the Outdoor Rec staff are climbers and are able to give you helpful tips and tricks as well as offer many free clinics and workshops:  Climber Fitness Training (Mondays, 7:30pm), Boulders, Beats, and Beta (Tuesdays, 7pm), or Ladies' Climbing Night (Thursdays, 7pm). Learn more about bouldering here
